Place Traps Correctly For Better Fly Control

Place Traps Correctly

It is important to put the right type of trap in the right location. This might be the biggest mistake retailers and misinformed customers make. It can be a whopper of a mistake too. Place the wrong trap in the wrong place and you’ll catch nothing or bring every fly in the area to your barn.

Sticky Traps

Sticky Fly Traps Are An Excellent Complement To Fly Predators.
Sticky Fly Trap

Put Sticky Traps where you see flies. Flies are visually attracted to these traps so put them in areas with light, not the darkest part of a barn. Because House Flies generally rest higher up where it’s warmer, put Sticky Traps up high, above your critter’s reach. Sticky Traps are good for inside the barn because they'll get the flies that are already there, but not bring more in. Sticky Traps work exactly how their name implies. They’re sticky so flies (and other not so lucky bugs) land on the trap they are stuck and can’t fly away.

Odor Traps

Odor Traps lure and catch House Flies (but not Stable Flies) from a wide area. You never want to put Odor Traps in your barn or by your back door as you'll draw all the files in the neighborhood to exactly where you don't want them. The exception is if you’re drowning in gazillions of flies, then put Odor Traps where you see the flies, but only initially, to bring the population down. Then move the trap away from the barn to draw flies elsewhere. Unlike what you may have heard, you never, ever want to put these on or by your picnic table. Putting Odor Traps there is like inviting all the neighborhood flies to the party too.

Use Odor Traps to lure flies away from you or your animals. They should go at least 50-75 feet away from the barn. They can also go on the fence line between you and the neighbor sending flies over. If you don't know where the flies are coming from, try putting traps on every side. The ones that fill up fastest could indicate which direction your flies are coming from.

House Flies generally feed near the ground and rest and mate higher up. Odor Traps like Starbar's, with both feed and sex attractants, can be placed both low and high. Put one in each location and see what works best for you. Temperature also matters since flies are cold blooded and depend on the ambient temperature to regulate their activity. That's why you see them on a warm south-facing wall when it’s cool, or in a shady barn or under leaves or weeds if it’s hot. If it's in the 70s or lower put traps in the sun. If it’s above 85 put traps in the shade.

Biting Stable Fly Trap

Biting Stable Fly Traps Can Be Critical to Pest Control.
Biting Stable Fly Trap

Biting Stable Fly Traps work the same way as Sticky Traps in that they attract the flies visually. But yellow is not the fashion ticket for Stable Flies. Sunlight reflecting through this special material is what attracts the flies so be sure to place these in sunny areas. Biting Stable Flies bite animals on the legs and flanks so place it at about the same height , 2-3 feet off the ground, not more than 4 feet. Putting this type of trap just outside the barn doors and where your animals cannot mess with it works best.

Be aware that the Stable Flies can reproduce in rotting vegetative matter, not just horse manure, so these can be coming from places you might not expect. Round bale rings with old spoiled hay at the bottom, old mucky bedding, spoiled grain and silage, grass clippings, compost piles. Click here for more Stable Fly info.
