Yes, I know it’s only August but the kids are going back to school and before you know it fall is going to be here in then Winter will set in. It’s best to be prepared when it comes to all things horsey! After you drop the kids at school and have a little spare time on your hands... bring out your winter layers, check the fluids in your car and prep your equestrian life for winter!

  1. Pull out your winter blankets and stable sheets to check for holes, dirt, or rips well before you need to use them. This way you have time for cleaning and repair. I use a 1/4 cup of Bye Bye Odor with every blanket ran through the machine cycle. Until you have time to wash them in the machine, spray Bye Bye Odor directly on the blanket urine and poo spots. For safety, fix the rips before they become holes and patch the holes before the blanket is completely destroyed.
  2. It’s a good habit to start applying a conditioner to your horse’s hooves as the weather shifts to chillier days. Use an all natural dressing that will help keep moisture in and promote hoof growth through the cold months.
  3. Clean your tack! Give your saddle, bridle, and other leather tack a nice clean and condition. This can include your martingale or a leather halter. This keeps them protected through the cold months and it will extend the life of their use.
  4. Strip the stalls and clean out your horses bedding thoroughly. I spray Bye Bye Odor on my horse’s urine spots daily but, twice a year, I strip the stalls completely and spray Bye Bye Odor over the entire floor + up the walls about 3 feet because urine often splatters. It not only makes the barn smell great but also consumes the ammonia which can create respiratory inflammations in your horses.
  5. Keep a fungus control spray on hand for when those winter outbreaks will occur (because we all know they will!). Make sure you have a thrush remedy on hand for any prolonged damp weather.

Be prepared, give a good fall cleaning, get ready to keep warm, and enjoy the last lovely bits of summer you’ve had. Fall is upon and winter is soon behind it!
